So here I am in the new apartment, half-moved in from my place in Brooklyn and surrounded by stacks of my books waiting to find a home on shelves, getting ready to merge households with my boyfriend and make a new home in the city.
This is, of course, a sign that everything went well a couple weeks ago when the bf and I went down to Wilmington, North Carolina, with dog in tow, for a weekend spent with his family.
Meeting the family didn't have me nervous--they were fantastic, and a lot of fun--but it was the game of golf that had me freaked out. They're all golfers. Me? Not so much. And they wanted to do nine holes. But (luckily?) the schedule changed and all we had time for was the driving range, which resulted in considerably less embarrassment. (Still, though: Embarrassment. With a dash of courage and the willpower to finish a large bucket of balls.) (Josh K., I can hear you snickering. Pipe down.)
Oh, and did I mention that we drove there from Manhattan? Oh yes, friends. Drove. Twelve hours each way, with breaks to let the puppy pee and refill the gas tank. I consider it a positive sign for our relationship that the drive, both ways, went with very little fuss. Mostly it was about snacking, singing along to various iPod selections, checking out the scenery (who knew North Carolina was so pretty?), and kissing after we crossed each state line. (Anybody getting nauseated from the mushy stuff yet? Okay, okay, I'll stop.)
After we got back I had one day in the city and then I was on yet another plane, headed to my hometown of Minneapolis where I met a new member of our family (so cute, so tiny, so fun to hold) and spent a few days relaxing with my family in the 'burbs.
And now? Back to the city. Moving from Brooklyn to the Upper East Side, not far at all from the first apartment Josh K and I had in the city. The job hunt is on like Donkey Kong now that I'm finishing up my consulting gig with the uptown environmental non-profit, and I've got something juicy in my sites, so there will updates if happy news is afoot.
At the end of this month I'm off for an eleven-day cross-country road trip with my boyfriend and two other friends: Adam, who co-starred in "Jonathan, Just Because," and Adam's friend, Leah, a stand-up comic. If the Wilmington trip is any indication of how the cross-country trip is going to go I'm thinking I'm in for a pretty good time.
I may even set up a Twitter thingy to update as the 5,000-plus mile journey unfolds. Josh K has been trying to convert me to Twitterdom and I think he may have finally made his case. Might as well, right? If you can't beat 'em, join 'em.
