Josh & Josh amigo Edward Bottger—the podcast superstar, singer, songwriter, and musician—told us about seven songs he's loving right now, and we couldn't resist sharing the audiophile love. Feast your ears on these great picks.
one | Quixote | "Before I Started to Dance"
Quixote is a side project from the guys behind electronic outfits Chateau Flight and I:Cube. This track, featuring Lisa Li-Lund on vocals, is simple, catchy, and propulsive. Great getting-ready-to-go-out music that will make you vogue while your hair is in curlers.
two | The Sugarmen | "London Paris" (HOD remix)
I don't really know anything about The Sugarmen except that they're from LA. What I can tell you is that HOD stands for Hearts of Darknesses, a.k.a. Frank Musarra, who is amazing at all things. His remix of this song is so good I busted my hip while shaking my huge ass to it. There is a new Hearts of Darknesses EP coming out very soon, so check it out and you can say you were into him before everyone else.
three | Apparat | "Holdon" (Chris de Luca Vs. Phon.o Remix)
Apparat is Berliner Sascha Ring, who makes eclectic electronic music and collaborates with other great German artists like Modeselektor and Ellen Allien. This track started out funky and was made funkier by some people I've never heard of, who remixed it.
four | Turntablerocker | "Whenever Wherever"
This is one of those sort of motivational dance tracks that you wanna put on while on the elliptical machine. The lyrics are a little bit self-help but the song has soul, and it's by one of my favorite dance artists. Their track "Love Supreme" is a permanent fixture on my iPod and in my mixes.
five | Apache Beat | "Tropics"
How many bands can you name that mix post-punk, dream-pop, afrobeat, and krautrock? Apache Beat does, and they should really be famous for it. They have a glamorous frontwoman in Ilirjana Alushaj. (Check out their hot video.)
six | Valgeir Sigurðsson | "Winter Sleep"
Winter sounds like this, and Valgeir Sigurðsson should know, because he's Icelandic. Apparently everyone in Iceland makes gorgeous electro-acoustic/neo-classical music (which is great for the rest of us, who don't). Icleand's National Bank collapsed in October, but perhaps the silver lining is that it will inspire more music like this.
seven | Little Annie & Paul Wallfisch | "Song for You"
This is like gay heaven. A Carpenters cover sung by a smoky-voiced jazz diva with ornate piano accompaniment. Little Annie has been around forever but recently caught the attention of the indie music world when she collaborated with Antony (of he and the Johnsons) on 2006's Songs from the Coal Mine Canary, which critics salivated over (and rightly so). Annie's vocals make you long for the days before auto-tune, when songs were sung by actual people.
Get more of the fabulous (if not slightly dangerous) Edward Bottger (and his BFF/frenemy George Alley) on their smash-hit podcast I'm Going To Kill You. (Be sure to catch episode #55 of their podcast. They have some crazy dude on the show who refuses to stop doing a Minnesotan accent and/or talking about Sarah Palin. Just tragic.)
what great taste in music, thanks for the info, I'm going to check out I'm Going to Kill You they both look hot.
